Heavy-duty transportation covers transportation activities that require special engineering and planning, beyond standard transportation capacities. Equipment that usually weighs more than 50 tons and requires oversized or precise assembly are evaluated in this category. Products such as transformers of power plants, wind turbine propellers, industrial press machines, bridge elements or construction cranes are not suitable for transportation by ordinary logistics processes. In order for such loads to be transported safely and legally, elements such as routing, road analysis, permit processes and selection of transport equipment must be handled with a holistic approach.

With detailed road analysis before transportation, elements such as bridge load capacities, bend radii, power lines, tunnel heights and traffic density are mapped. As a result of this evaluation, the most appropriate route is determined and road permission is obtained from all necessary local authorities. This process requires multinational coordination, especially in international shipments, as there are different permit and document requirements in each transited country.

The equipment used in heavy cargo transportation is also different from standard transportation vehicles. Modular trailers, low platform trucks, hydraulically operated axle systems and special lateral support mechanisms are designed to ensure the stability and safety of the load. These vehicles offer high manoeuvrability in both road and in-port manoeuvres. Special fastening systems are used to protect the load against vibration, slope or wind effects during transportation.

The main categories of transportation that should be considered in heavy cargo transportation are:

• Overweight loads: Industrial equipment with a single axle or exceeding the total weight limit, usually in the range of 50-200 tons.
• Over-height Loads: Transformers or factory chimney parts with a height of over 4.5 meters.
• Over-width loads: Crane arms or prefabricated building elements with widths over 3 meters.
• Over-length loads: Wind turbine blades or pipelines exceeding 20 meters.
• Loads requiring precise assembly: Sensitive laboratory devices or nuclear plant equipment that may be affected by vibration.

Each category engenders different leave processes, escort requirements, and conditions of carriage. For example, when an over-width cargo is transported at night, the escort can proceed with the vehicle; If it is an over-height load, it may be necessary to temporarily remove the power lines before passing through certain bridges. Such operations are only possible through collaboration with experienced teams and local authorities.
